On the afternoon of June 6, 2025, the opening meeting for the major research project of the Ministry of Education's Philosophy and Social Sciences Research, "Compilation, Research and Database Construction of the History of Translation of Core Concepts of Chinese Culture", was held in Conference Room 2 of the General Office Building at the Xuhui Campus of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. More than 30 people attended the meeting, including Gu Feng, the Vice Executive Director of the University Council; Liu Zhao, the deputy director of the Office of Humanities and Social Sciences, Shang Biwu, the dean of the School of Foreign Languages, Zhu Yifan, the Party Secretary of the School of Foreign Languages, experts from the review group of the major research project of the Ministry of Education's Philosophy and Social Sciences Research, scholars from related fields in the academic circle, and the leaders of sub-projects. 

The first stage of the conference was chaired by Liu Zhao. Gu Feng, the Vice Executive Director of the University Council, warmly welcomed all the guests and introduced the development of Shanghai Jiao Tong University. Gu Feng congratulated Professor Zhu Yifan on the approval of her major research project and put forward requirements for its implementation. He expected the project to systematically sort out the translation process of core Chinese cultural concepts, build a multilingual translation database, and contribute to the international dissemination of Chinese culture. He also stated that the university would fully support this innovative interdisciplinary research that combined liberal arts and sciences, and hoped that it would become an academic model for telling China's story well. 

Professor Shang Biwu, the dean of the School of Foreign Languages, expressed his gratitude on behalf of the SFL to all the leaders and experts present and introduced the development of the foreign language discipline at Shanghai Jiao Tong University and the achievements made. 

Zhu Yifan, the chief expert of the major research project, reported to the review panel on the overall design and progress of the project. She focused on four core issues: the criteria for defining core concepts of Chinese culture, the research goals of the history of translation, the methods for screening multilingual literature, and the path for database construction. The project was divided into five sub-projects, and ultimately will produce a monograph titled "On the History of Translation of Core Concepts of Chinese Culture" and an intelligent database, which will contribute to enhancing the research on the translation of Chinese culture. 

Subsequently, the five sub-project leaders, including Professor Zhu Yifan, respectively made project presentations.

The second stage of the meeting was chaired by Professor Yu Jing from the School of Foreign Languages. The experts on the review panel provided comments on the project's opening work. The expert members of the review panel listened carefully to the presentation of the research team. They recognized the research framework of the project, considering it to have a complete theoretical system and rigorous logic, as well as both academic innovation and practical significance. They also provided suggestions for optimizing the research path. After deliberation by the expert group, it was unanimously agreed to approve the project proposal. 

The third stage of the conference was chaired by Associate Professor Xue Song from the School of Foreign Languages. Scholars from relevant fields in the academic circle engaged in academic discussions around the research project. Many representatives from the academic circle pointed out that the research topic had significant academic value and practical significance. The research framework was systematic and complete, and the methodology was appropriately applied. Particularly, it demonstrated remarkable advantages in the cross-disciplinary research perspective and the innovative application of digital humanities technology. 

Finally, Professor Zhu Yifan, the chief expert of the project, on behalf of the research team, expressed sincere gratitude to the experts of the review group and the representatives of the academic community for their opinions and suggestions. She clearly stated that the research team would fully absorb the experts' suggestions, further optimize the research framework, and be committed to systematically sorting out the translation history of core Chinese cultural concepts and building a high-quality academic database platform to provide strong support for academic research and social application. Amidst warm applause, the opening thesis meeting of the project came to a successful conclusion.
